Background

Resin composite restorative materials are among the most commonly used for both direct and indirect aesthetic tooth-colored restorations. The durability and longevity of these restorations are key factors in treatment planning for both the dentist and the patient. Proper and wise material selection, considering patient- and tooth-related factors, can greatly influence how long these restorations last. Several factors can affect the clinical durability of resin composite restorations, such as polymerization shrinkage, marginal leakage, inadequate bonding, inadequate mechanical properties, staining, and technique sensitivity. Additionally, extrinsic factors such as oral biofilm and environmental conditions might affect their durability. Researchers and clinicians are exploring modifications in the materials’ composition or application and polymerization techniques to enhance the longevity of resin composite restorations.



The primary goal of this Research Topic is to expand the understanding of factors that impact the long-term durability of resin composite restorations and the different strategies to manage these factors. For this Research Topic, we welcome manuscripts that investigate the impact of modifications in the materials’ composition or application and polymerization techniques on enhancing the longevity of resin composite restorations. Manuscripts evaluating the impact of different intrinsic and extrinsic factors on the restorations’ durability and strategies proposed to improve clinical performance are also welcome. This Research Topic aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the factors that influence longevity, novel strategies to improve clinical performance, and translate research findings into clinical practice to improve patient outcomes.



This Research Topic welcomes original research articles, review articles, and case reports addressing the following topics related to the durability of dental resin composite restorations, covering, but not limited to, the following themes:



Biomaterials Science:



a. Fabrication of novel experimental resin composite materials with enhanced properties through modifications in the filler and/or matrix phases.



b. Characterization of novel commercial materials’ properties, including mechanical, physical, and chemical properties.



c. Evaluating the effect of modifying current resin restorative materials to enhance their clinical durability and performance.



d. Evaluating the impact of aging on different materials’ properties and degradation.



Clinical Research:



a. Clinical trials evaluating the long-term performance of resin composite restorations.



b. Investigating different factors influencing the durability of restorations, whether patient-related, operator-related, or material-related.



c. Evaluating the effect of different oral hygiene habits on the durability of restorations.



Biomechanics:



a. Biomechanical evaluation of experimental and novel commercial materials through finite element analysis (FEA) to simulate clinical stress distribution and possible failure mechanisms.



b. Investigation of the impact of different masticatory and pathological habits on the durability of restorations.



Microbial-material Interactions:



a. Evaluating the role of oral biofilm and oral flora in the biodegradation of resin composite restorations.



b. Investigating the effect of various antimicrobial agents on biofilm formation and the durability of the restoration.
