Background

The rapid development of point-of-need diagnostic technologies is democratizing healthcare, enabling access to timely and accurate detection of biomarkers and pathogens in diverse settings, including resource-limited environments and at home. Despite significant progress, translating laboratory-based assays into effective diagnostics for complex and highly variable biological matrices—such as blood—remains a considerable challenge. Additionally, sample preparation methods need to be adapted to point-of-care, where commonly used, equipment-assisted workflows are no longer compatible. Also, to ensure successful translation user-friendliness, robustness, cost and manufacturability at a large scale need to be considered as early as possible during development.

This Research Topic will highlight innovative approaches for translatable ultrasensitive diagnostics for use with blood and integrated with robust, point-of-need, sample preparation methods.

We aim to provide a platform for researchers and professionals to share their findings, discuss challenges, and propose future directions in this rapidly evolving field. This will be an invaluable resource for scientists, researchers, industry stakeholders, and funding agencies interested in the latest advancements in truly translatable, point-of-need diagnostics.

• Who leads a Research Topic? 

  A team of guest editors (called topic editors) lead their Research Topic. This editorial team oversees the entire process, from the initial topic proposal to calls for participation, the peer review, and final publications.
