The 42nd Annual Meeting of the Australasian Neuroscience Society (ANS) will be held in Perth, Western Australia between December 2nd-4th 2024. To highlight this event, Frontiers in Neurology and Frontiers in Neuroscience are collaborating with the ANS to spotlight important themes from the conference in two Research Topics: 'New Insights in Neuroimaging' in Frontiers in Neurology, and 'New Insights in Neurodegeneration' in Frontiers in Neuroscience.
Research into neurodegenerative diseases has come a long way in terms of underlying mechanisms, biomarkers, and potential treatments. Specifically, recent advances in fluid and imaging biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease and the treatments that are already on the market or are under investigation are promising. These recent advances, however, require further scrutiny to identify and clarify their shortcomings and propose new approaches and methods that can be close to ideal in terms of accessibility, time and cost-effectiveness, and side effects. Such progress in one disease can also inform progress in other neurodegenerative diseases.
This Research Topic aims to highlight emerging and established strategies to decode the mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases. It seeks to address the spectrum from current diagnostic and screening techniques to prospective interventions. Furthermore, the research presented will delve into various risk factors associated with neurodegeneration, exploring both modifiable and non-modifiable aspects, and discuss the latest and upcoming preventive, therapeutic, and management strategies.
To gather further insights within this intricate field, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
• Underlying mechanisms of neurodegeneration such as amyloidosis, tauopathies, prion diseases, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation.
• Advances in screening and diagnostic tools, from fluid and imaging biomarkers to genetic markers, and clinical and neuropsychological evaluation methods.
• Analysis of risk factors specific to different neurodegenerative diseases.
• Innovative approaches in prevention, treatment, and management of neurodegenerative conditions
Keywords:
Neurodegeneration, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, Young onset dementia, Underlying mechanisms, Clinical trials, amyloid antibodies, immunotherapy, Biomarkers, Modifiable risk factors, thauopaties
Important Note:
All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
