The International Symposium on Biopolymers (ISBP) is a successful series of symposia taking place usually every two years since the very first meeting in Toronto 1988. The 19th International Symposium on BioPolymers will take place from the 20th-23rd of October 2024 and will be held in-person on Penang Island, Malaysia, and is organized by the School of Biological Sciences at the Universiti Sains Malaysia. This Research Topic will host the proceedings of the conference with selected publications from conference participants. Following a successful collaboration in 2022, this second edition marks nearly 100 years since the discovery of PHA, and it highlights both fundamental and advanced developments in biopolymer research.
The Research Topic will comprise a collection of scientific publications related to the key elements that are presented at the International Symposium on Biopolymers (ISBP2024). The purpose of this conference is to showcase the latest advancements in various aspects of biopolymers with the theme of ‘Towards Safe and Sustainable Biopolymers for our Future.’ The topics to be explored include engineering advances in biopolymer synthesis, biosynthesis and characterization of novel biopolymers, exploring building blocks for bio-based polymers, biodegradation pathways, environmental impacts of biopolymers, sustainable feedstocks for biopolymer production, challenges in industrial production of biopolymers, PHA waste management, exploration of other biopolymers and bio-based polymers, applications of novel biopolymers in various industries, and rubber biosynthesis and biodegradation.
The themes covered in this Research Topic include but are not limited to the following:
• Metabolic pathways and systems engineering
• Biosynthesis and characterization of novel biopolymers
• Exploration of bio-based polymers
• Innovation in fermentation technology
• Sustainable feedstocks
• Formulating and applications of biopolymers in industry and medicine
• Environmental impacts of biopolymers
• Degradation of biopolymers
• Advances and challenges in industrial polymer production
Keywords:
ISBP, Sustainable biopolymers, Novel biopolymers, Fermentation technology, Sustainable feedstocks
Important Note:
All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
