Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are small lipid vesicles carrying nucleic acids and proteins. EVs are released by the majority, if not all, cell types, including bacteria. In recent years, EVs have been increasingly recognized as central players in the regulation of the immune response in acute and chronic inflammation. Indeed, they have been identified as drivers of matrix remodeling and cellular cross-talks in a plethora of cell types and diseases.
The role of EVs in cancer has been widely explored and there is a clear increasing interest in better understanding how EVs shape immune cell behavior and how immune cells affect tissue resident cells via EVs. This Research Topic aims to highlight cutting-edge research on the role of EVs in the modulation of acute and chronic inflammation. This is a rapidly expanding field as many cellular phenomena have been now linked to the release and uptake of EVs and their cargo.
The scope of this research topic is to highlight original work done to advance our understanding of how EVs affect immune cell function or how immune cell-derived EVs shape tissue responses. This research topic will include original research articles as well as review articles pertinent to its topic.
