The rapid advancement of generative AI technologies is expanding the impact of AI tools across social,
economic, and cultural spheres. As AI continues to reshape human activity, fostering AI literacy for all becomes
increasingly essential. While other forms of literacy, such as digital, data, and media literacy, address specific
competencies within our knowledge society, AI literacy encompasses a broader, more transformative potential.
Despite substantial research on AI literacy, many key stakeholders—ranging from educators and policymakers
to industry leaders—struggle to find cohesive strategies for addressing AI literacy at a societal level. Given the
swift evolution and complex challenges posed by AI, the research community must continually refine and
redefine the concept of AI literacy to ensure its development remains relevant across all sectors.
This Research Topic aims to consolidate and advance current research and thinking on AI literacy, exploring both
the opportunities and challenges presented by the pervasive and rapidly evolving nature of AI tools. There is an
urgent need for a unified understanding among researchers, educators, and practitioners of the diverse
knowledge, skills, and competencies that constitute AI literacy. We seek to identify effective strategies for
fostering these competencies across different sectors, communities, and contexts, ensuring they are accessible
and applicable to all ages, roles, and backgrounds. This call for papers offers a platform to address widespread
uncertainty and misconceptions about AI, and to shape a comprehensive understanding of AI literacy as it stands
today while guiding future research and practice. Ultimately, this collection aims to influence educational policy,
inform curriculum development, and provide practical guidance on the use of AI tools.
We invite manuscripts on a wide range of topics related to AI literacy, including but not limited to theoretical
discussions, analytical frameworks, technology tools, and practical applications. We welcome empirical studies,
practice-based papers, case studies, and speculative essays. Contributions that adopt interdisciplinary
approaches are especially encouraged. We are particularly interested in submissions that challenge current
paradigms, propose innovative frameworks, or offer perspectives from underrepresented cultures, regions, or
sectors.
Given the diverse applications of AI literacy, we encourage contributions from researchers and practitioners
across various fields such as education, business, innovation, policy-making, and personal development. Potential
themes for submission include:
Frameworks and Models: New theoretical approaches, models, and comprehensive reviews.
Applications and Practices: Strategies for developing AI literacy in different contexts, innovative teaching methods, and practical tools.
Ethical and Cultural Dimensions: Addressing ethical challenges, exploring cultural perspectives, and
envisioning future directions for AI literacy. We look forward to receiving contributions that will drive forward the dialogue on AI literacy and its critical role in
shaping a technologically literate society.
Keywords:
AI literacy, education, competencies, skills, critical thinking
Important Note:
All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
