Neuralgia, characterized by acute paroxysmal pain radiating along the course of one or more nerves, is a significant concern in the field of neurology. It predominantly affects older individuals, severely impacting their quality of life and imposing a substantial financial burden. Common forms of neuralgia include postherpetic neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, alcoholic neuropathy, and peripheral neuropathy. Despite its prevalence, the underlying mechanisms of neuralgia remain poorly understood, with many cases having no identifiable cause. This lack of understanding poses challenges in diagnosis and treatment, as there are no specific tests for neuralgia, and the condition may persist or worsen over time. Current treatments vary based on the cause, location, and severity of pain, ranging from medications and physical therapy to complex procedures like spinal cord stimulation. However, the incomplete understanding of neuralgia's mechanisms limits the development of effective therapeutic targets, highlighting the need for further research into its pathogenesis and innovative treatment approaches.
This research topic aims to advance the understanding of the mechanisms underlying neuralgia and explore novel therapeutic strategies. By focusing on recent advancements in the pathophysiological understanding of various types of neuralgia, the research seeks to identify new targets for pharmacological intervention and innovative treatment approaches. The goal is to address the challenges in prevention, diagnosis, and clinical therapy, including the development of new medicines and operative procedures. Through this research, we aim to provide insights that can lead to translational approaches, ultimately improving the quality of life for individuals affected by neuralgia.
