About this Research Topic
Psychocardiology is an interdisciplinary field that explores the intricate connections between mental health disorders and cardiac diseases. These conditions are interwoven through shared neuro-hormonal, physiological, behavioral, cognitive, social, and genetic/epigenetic factors, which collectively influence both psychological and cardiological health. Recent research has highlighted the significance of childhood experiences in the development of adult mental and cardiovascular disorders, emphasizing a lifetime perspective. This approach considers the impact of adverse life events, metabolic programming, and allostatic load on the long-term progression of psychocardiologic diseases. Current evidence suggests that psychological distress can disrupt stress-hormone systems, affecting neuronal circuits and cardiovascular health directly, and indirectly by promoting unhealthy behaviors. Despite these insights, there remains a need for further comprehensive research to fully understand the brain-heart interface and to develop effective interventions to support patient health and well-being.
This Research Topic aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of psychocardiology, showcasing diverse perspectives from disciplines such as Psychiatry, Psychosomatic Medicine, Cardiology, Psychology, Psychotherapy, and Physiotherapy. The objective is to address key questions regarding the mechanisms linking mental and cardiac health, the developmental trajectory of these disorders, and the effectiveness of preventive and therapeutic strategies. By integrating findings from various fields, this Research Topic seeks to advance our understanding of psychocardiology and inform clinical practice.
To gather further insights into the complex interactions between the brain and heart, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
- Mechanisms: the psychological and neuro-biological mechanisms linking heart and brain
- Clinical observations and data: case series, original publications
- From early life to adulthood: the lifespan perspective of co-development of psychocardiological disorders
- Prevention: preventive strategies, such as early interventions to enhance health literacy, or strategies counteracting unhealthy lifestyle and obesity
- Treatment: treatment strategies, such as psychoeducation, psychotherapy, and pharmacological strategies
- Epidemiology: Epidemiology, health economics, and healthcare research.
