Muscle atrophy, commonly referred to as muscle wasting, and sarcopenia, the age-related decline in muscle mass and function, are significant health concerns that lead to reduced quality of life and increased morbidity and mortality. These conditions are influenced by a variety of factors, including aging, chronic diseases such as heart failure and cancer cachexia, inactivity, and denervation. The molecular mechanisms underlying these conditions are intricate, involving oxidative stress, inflammation, and the activation of signal transduction pathways like the ubiquitin-proteasome system, autophagy-lysosome system, and mTOR. While exercise is a recognized countermeasure, its applicability is limited for individuals with reduced mobility. With the global population aging, the economic and social burdens of muscle atrophy and sarcopenia are escalating, highlighting the urgent need for effective treatments. Current research has made strides in understanding these mechanisms, yet there remains a gap in developing comprehensive therapeutic strategies.
This research topic aims to explore the pathogenesis of muscle atrophy and sarcopenia and to develop effective therapeutic strategies. The focus is on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms that contribute to these conditions and on fostering innovative approaches to therapy development. While excessive protein degradation has been identified as a primary cause, prevention and treatment strategies remain limited. This research seeks to address these gaps by examining the underlying biological processes and proposing novel therapeutic interventions.
To gather further insights into the mechanisms and novel treatments of muscle wasting, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
- Emerging cellular and molecular mechanisms contributing to muscle atrophy and sarcopenia
- Insights into cellular and molecular mechanisms driving muscle repair
- Identification and exploration of biomarkers associated with muscle atrophy and sarcopenia
- Innovation in methods and pharmacological interventions for muscle atrophy and sarcopenia treatment
