Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are a burgeoning area of research within the field of hematology, offering novel insights into the pathophysiology of hematological disorders. These nanoparticles, ranging from 50 to 200 nm in diameter, are released by various cell types and encompass a diverse array of particles, including microvesicles, exosomes, apoptotic bodies, and exomeres. The biogenesis pathways, particle size, surface molecules, and cargo content of EVs, which include nucleic acids, proteins, lipids, and other biomolecules, are critical for their function in cell-to-cell communication. Despite the growing body of research, there remain significant gaps in understanding the specific roles of EVs in hematological disorders, particularly in relation to their surface molecules and cargo content. Recent studies have highlighted the potential of EVs in elucidating the pathophysiological dynamics of diseases, yet comprehensive investigations into their specific contributions to hematological disorders are still needed.

This research topic aims to achieve a comprehensive understanding of EV biology and their roles in hematological disorders and related disorders to enhance our understanding of their roles in pathophysiology. The primary objectives include exploring the mechanisms by which erythroid and platelet-derived EVs contribute to conditions such as anemia and endothelial damage, respectively. Additionally, the research seeks to investigate the role of EVs released by immuno-competent cells during infection or immune-related pathological processes. By addressing these questions, the research aims to uncover potential therapeutic targets and improve clinical outcomes for patients with hematological disorders.
