Stem cells facilitate tissue and organ development, yet stem cell-mediated adult tissue regeneration is restricted in most mammals. Regenerative capabilities vary widely across species, with some losing the stem cell/progenitor pool by adulthood. Understanding this process will help reactivate the tissue regeneration process in adults. Studies have made progress in elucidating the mechanism of action of stem cells during development and regeneration. Over the past few decades, investigations in highly regenerative organisms have identified factors critical for regeneration, and many are redundant from early development.

• Stem cell functions and mechanisms in tissue and organ development in multicellular organisms.
• Cellular and molecular mechanisms of stem cell populations in prenatal tissue repair and injury.
• Alterations in stem cell function in developmental disorders.

• Advanced techniques in stem cell manipulation and transplantations aimed at correcting developmental defects and improving adult tissue regeneration.
