Pregnancy can lead to hormonal changes in the body which can affect oral health. Common changes in oral health that can occur during pregnancy include increased risk of dental caries, gingivitis, periodontal diseases and other oral conditions. Poor oral health during pregnancy can increase the risk of preterm birth, low birth weight and preeclampsia. Besides, a mother's oral health can have a significant influence on the oral health of her children by transmitting oral bacteria to her child. Parents also play a vital role in teaching and modelling good oral hygiene habits for their children, and help them establish lifelong oral health habits. Therefore, taking care of both mothers’ and children’s oral health is essential for promoting healthy smiles, preventing dental problems, and supporting overall health and well-being.
This Research Topic will provide readers with up-to-date information on oral health and care in pregnant women, infants and preschool children and raise the awareness of clinical practitioners and dental researchers regarding the importance of their oral health and care.
This Research Topic welcomes original research, reviews and case reports (with good quality photos) related to oral health and care in pregnant women, infants and preschool children, which can include but not limited to oral health promotion, assessment or management of the oral health diseases and conditions of the target population, oral health care strategies and programs, and novel oral health care protocols. The oral health care strategies can be considered in both individual and community levels.
