Background

This Research Topic is part of a series of:https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/51493/epigenetic-and-genetic-mechanisms-underlying-cardiovascular-diseases-and-neurodevelopmental-disorders/magazine

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) represent significant health burdens, linked by shared genetic and molecular pathways despite their distinct anatomical development sites. Recent studies have highlighted how survivors of congenital CVD are at heightened risk for NDD, with genetic investigations revealing substantial overlaps in the variants associated with both conditions. These disorders are marked by diverse clinical manifestations and complex etiologies, driving the need for a deeper understanding of their underlying pathogenic mechanisms to better address their pathophysiology and identify novel therapeutic targets.

This Research Topic aims to advance our understanding of the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms that contribute to the etiology of CVD and NDD. The role of early developmental mismatches between genetic potential and environmental conditions often leads to adverse epigenetic modifications, influencing disease susceptibility and progression. Despite the advancements in gene sequencing technology, significant gaps remain in our understanding of how these genetic and epigenetic factors culminate in CVD and NDD. Contributions to this topic will help close these gaps, offering new insights into the mechanisms at play and potentially pointing towards predictive markers or therapeutic interventions.

To gather further insights in the complex interplay between genetics, epigenetics, and disease manifestation in CVD and NDD, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

Interaction between genetic and environmental factors for cardiovascular diseases and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Identification of novel disease-causing genes and variants, as well as epigenetic modifications underlying cardiovascular diseases and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Molecular mechanisms of inherited cardiovascular diseases and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Epigenetic mechanisms involved in the therapeutic treatment of cardiovascular diseases and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Epigenetic therapeutic targets for cardiovascular diseases and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Keywords: Cardiovascular diseases, Neurodevelopmental disorders, Genetic factors, Epigenetic etiologies
