About this Research Topic

Background

Deficits in brain functions are prevalent in many psychiatric disorders. As such, they relate to the capacity of patients to engage effectively in their daily lives, which contributes significantly to the global burden of disability and disease. Among the recent breakthroughs, the discovery of the glymphatic system stands out as a paradigm-shifting revelation with profound implications for our understanding of brain function and dysfunction in psychiatric disorders. By exploring the relatively uncharted territory of the glymphatic system's involvement in psychiatric conditions, we strive to elucidate the complex interplay between brain fluid dynamics, waste clearance mechanisms, and the development and progression of disorders such as depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia, et cetera.

We call for papers related to the research, including but not limited to:

1. Papers on fundamental investigations into the functioning of the glymphatic system in both healthy and diseased states.

2. Research on exploring the role of the glymphatic system in psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia.

3. Research exploring potential therapeutic interventions targeting the glymphatic system for the treatment of psychiatric disorders. This may include pharmacological agents that enhance glymphatic function, lifestyle interventions that promote healthy sleep and circulation, and novel approaches to modulate neuroinflammation and synaptic plasticity.

4. Clinical studies will correlate glymphatic function with symptom severity, treatment response, and disease progression in people with psychiatric disorders.

Despite the potential significance of the glymphatic system in psychiatric disorders, there is a paucity of research addressing this relationship. By elucidating the role of the glymphatic system in psychiatric disorders, this Research Topic strives to bridge the gap between these traditionally distinct fields and pave the way for innovative approaches to diagnosis and treatment.
