About this Research Topic

This Research Topic is currently accepting articles, but is closing soon.

Background

Sarcoidosis, a multi-system granulomatous disease primarily affecting the lungs, continues to challenge medical research due to its unknown etiology and complex pathophysiology. Despite advancements in understanding the disease, the exact causes remain elusive. Over 90% of sarcoidosis patients exhibit pulmonary involvement, suggesting that inhalation of environmental antigens might play a crucial role in its onset. The granulomatous nature of sarcoidosis, combined with its diverse clinical presentations and varying responses to treatment, underscores the need for thorough investigation into its risk factors and mechanisms.

This Research Topic aims to elucidate the etiological factors, pathophysiological processes, and effective interventions for sarcoidosis. Given the significant lung involvement observed in most patients, the topic seeks to address the linkage between environmental exposures and the disease's development. Additionally, it will explore the effectiveness of various diagnostic modalities such as EBUS, core biopsy, and Cryobiopsy, and evaluate the potential of novel therapies like anti-TNF agents and anti-fibrotics in managing refractory cases.

To gather further insights into the boundaries of sarcoidosis research, we welcome articles, addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

· Occupational and environmental exposures contributing to sarcoidosis

· Pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the disease

· Biomarkers for early diagnosis and disease monitoring

· Vitamin D metabolism in sarcoidosis patients

· Advances in diagnostic techniques, including phenotyping and novel imaging modalities

· Treatment strategies for cardiac and neurosarcoidosis

· The role of lung transplantation and remote monitoring techniques in severe cases

· Interactions between pulmonary vascular dysfunction and sarcoidosis, including therapeutic implications.

This comprehensive focus on understanding and managing sarcoidosis through multidisciplinary research approaches promises to advance knowledge and improve patient outcomes.
