About this Research Topic
Wave and hydrokinetic energies, W&H (Wave and Hydrokinetic Energies) for short, in the latter's principal variants of tidal, estuary, and river current energies, are considered to be on the verge of market entry and as such are the next renewable energies for commercialisation. For more than three decades, a large body of academic research, as well as industrial Research and Development has been reported on W&H (Wave and Hydrokinetic Energies) and their integration as hybrid systems. Based on recent reviews of W&H work, cerca 10,000 papers have been published in the last two decades, dealing with various aspects such as resource assessment on global and regional scales, technology conversion systems, environmental impact, fluid flow dynamics, and integration of W&H energies to form hybrid renewable energy systems.
The objective of this Research Topic, in Frontiers in Energy Energy Journal, is the publication of state-of-the-art papers to present a panorama of the ongoing T&W(Wave and Hydrokinetic Energies) research across the globe. The papers in this Research Topic will aim to provide important solutions for alternative sources of energy from the fossil-fueled global economy, to the desired green economy which is based on renewable energy world wide.
The scope and themes we want to cover includes, but is not limited to:
- Fluid dynamics underlying W&H energies
- Resource assessment on both regional and global scales of W&H energies
- Novel concepts and devices for the conversion of W&H energies for electrical power generation
- Incorporation of W&H energies in smart grids
- Advances in equipment and system design for W&H for conversion to electrical power
- Integration of various types of W&H energies with each other
- Integration of various types of W&H energies with wind and solar energies
