About this Research Topic
The persistence of informal settlements, the unavailability of basic resources, heightened climate change related disasters and the state's incapacity to address urgent housing needs call for a rethink on the approaches to address these challenges.
This Research Topic recognizes that an interdisciplinary approach is required, and in reflection of this it brings together research on innovative and alternative building technologies and their reception especially in poor communities, how social inclusivity can build communities, and how resilience and adaptation will be essential to ensuring equitable access to sustainable housing in future. The need to create housing and human settlements which recognise the individual and unique needs of inhabitants is core to this Research Topic and the objective is to build a sound resource on all facets of human settlements sustainability.
In line with the Sustainable Development Goal 11, the questions of inadequate housing, particularly in the global south, poverty, and slow economic growth accompanied by increasing climate induced disasters require a rethink on the approaches taken to realize sustainable cities and communities.
