Background

We are excited to announce an open invitation for the submission of papers to our Research Topic on Mitohormesis. This article collection aims to bring together researchers, scientists, and scholars from various disciplines to explore and unravel the complexities of cellular resilience in response to moderate environmental stress through the lens of mitochondria.

Research Topic Call:
Have you heard about cryotherapy, infrared sauna, NAD IV drips and cold plunges? Are they good for you and your health? How do they work? Do they work? Can they stop aging and delay diseases by supporting mitochondrial function? We invite contributors to shed some light into diverse aspects of Mitohormesis ranging from molecular mechanisms to potential applications in health and disease.

Mitohormesis, a fascinating phenomenon which describes a cellular response where the induction of a mild mitochondrial stress boosts cell viability. In this process, mitochondria generate low levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), certain mitochondrial metabolites, proteotoxic signals, and mitokines which in turn act as signaling molecules and protect the cells from further damage by initiating an adaptive mitochondrial stress response. Mitohormesis includes a broad range of adaptive mechanisms like mitophagy, mitochondrial fusion/fission, release of mitokines, and mitochondrial unfolded proteins response. It requires a coordinated interaction between mitochondria and nucleus, known as mitonuclear communication.
