Cancer remains a formidable global health challenge, characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells, leading to millions of deaths annually. Traditional treatment modalities such as surgical resection, chemoradiotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy have been the mainstay of cancer management. However, the heterogeneity of cancer, coupled with issues like drug resistance, recurrence, and metastasis, complicates effective treatment. Precision oncology, which tailors treatment based on individual molecular and genetic profiles, offers a promising avenue for overcoming these challenges. Central to this approach is the identification of novel biomarkers that can enhance precision in diagnosis and treatment. Recent studies have highlighted the potential of natural compounds, such as flavonoids and polyphenols, which are abundant in food and plants, to exhibit anti-cancer properties. Despite these advances, there remains a significant gap in fully understanding the mechanisms by which these natural compounds exert their effects, and how they can be integrated into precision oncology strategies.
This research topic aims to explore the application of novel biomarkers and natural compounds in precision oncology. The primary objective is to investigate the effects and mechanisms of natural compounds on cancer cells, both in vitro and in vivo, and to identify potential molecular targets. Additionally, the research seeks to understand how these compounds can be standardized and their effects potentiated through novel nano-structured systems. By addressing these questions, the research aims to contribute to the development of more effective and personalized cancer therapies.
To gather further insights in the application of novel biomarkers and natural compounds in precision oncology, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
- Insights into the effect and mechanisms of natural compounds and their bioactive components on cancer cells in vitro and in vivo.
- Use of novel nano-structured systems to standardize and enhance the effects of natural compounds on cancer cells.
- Identification of potential targets and molecular mechanisms under the treatment of natural compounds on cancer cells.
- Exploration of novel links between natural compounds and metabolic pathways.
Please note: studies consisting solely of bioinformatic investigation of publicly available genomic/transcriptomic/proteomic data do not fall within the scope of the section unless they are expanded and provide significant biological or mechanistic insight into the process being studied.
