Gastrointestinal diseases are among one of the most common problems in tropical areas, and routinely present as abdominal pain, abdominal distension, diarrhea, malabsorption, malnutrition, or gastrointestinal bleeding. The causative agents can vary from water borne pathogens like E. coli, Vibrio cholerae, and Shigella, to neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). The epidemiology of NTDs are also very complicated which in turn makes their control difficult. These facts indicate that gastrointestinal health outcomes arising from tropical diseases can have a devastating impact on already prevailing socioeconomic and health crises.
Although the improvement in socioeconomic conditions and sanitation has significantly reduced the burden of such diseases, the persistence of tropical diseases and emergence of previously uncommon diseases in the tropics has raised several concerns.
This Research Topic aims to explore the epidemiology, prevalence, emergence, treatment, and unusual presentations of gastrointestinal diseases associated with tropical diseases, and therefore encourages submissions related, but not limited to, the following topics:
• The impact of infections on gut microbiota and its implications;
• The re-emergence of tropical diseases and gastrointestinal disease pathogenesis;
• Unusual case findings;
• The impact of gastrointestinal diseases on tropical healthcare.
Keywords:
Gastrointestinal diseases, Gastrointestinal Disorders, Neglected tropical diseases, Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage, Esophageal Diseases, Gastroenteritis, Intestinal Diseases, Parasitic diseases, Dengue, Malaria, Typhoid, Chagas disease, Cholera, Vector-borne
Important Note:
All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
