Urban areas, occupying a mere 2% of the land surface, harbor a striking 56% of the global population, produce 70% of global GDP, and significantly contribute to greenhouse gas emissions with a staggering 70% of the worldwide total. Such high carbon emissions solidify urban areas as a key role in achieving global climate goals. The transition to low-carbon cities is a necessary step in reducing anthropogenic carbon emissions. A thorough understanding of carbon emissions and anthropogenic activities in urban areas and their interaction mechanisms is the basis for the construction of low-carbon cities.
This Research Topic seeks high-quality research that investigates the various sources of carbon emissions in urban environments, including transportation, buildings, industrial processes, waste management, etc. We aim to address the challenges and provide opportunities for reducing carbon emissions in urban areas, from the advancement of sustainable practices and innovative technologies to the development of effective policy measures. It is crucial to explore the complex relationship between anthropogenic activities and carbon emissions in urban areas.
