The recovery of valuable resources from wastewater is of considerable interest and importance in many regions worldwide. As urban water consumption increases due to the improvement of the standard of living and rapid urbanization, wastewater reuse is significant at present. Thus, reliance on conventional wastewater treatment systems must be shifted into new paradigms to achieve specific goals associated with both resource recovery and water reuse applications. Membrane technologies, with their potential to achieve both functionalities, are emerging as great solutions due to the reduced footprint and cost, as well as significant advantages over traditional wastewater treatment technologies. Therefore, the evolution of membrane technology needs to be expanded to recover high-value materials from wastewater and achieve sustainable reuse through net-zero discharge processes.
The objective of this Research Topic is to study novel membrane technologies for resource recovery and wastewater reuse in circular economy and net-zero wastewater treatment processes. For example, the advances in membrane materials are aim to recover broad classes of resources on their physicochemical characteristics. Membrane technologies afford opportunities to be combined with other unit technologies to recover valuable materials and reclaimed water. This topic also deals with any emerging approach to tackle the technical limitations, as inevitable phenomena, to enhance membrane sustainability. The tech-economic and life cycle analysis relating to membrane-based resource recovery from wastewater is also included in this Research Topic.
In this Research Topic, we invite submission of manuscripts on, but not limited to, the following:
• Novel membrane materials to recover high valued products from wastes
• Advanced membrane reactors to increase efficiency of resource recovery
• Process intensification to increase value of reclaimed resource
• Tech-economic analysis relating to membrane-based resource recovery process
Keywords:
Membrane Technology, Resource Recovery, Wastewater Reuse, Circular Economy, Membrane Reactors, Tech-Economic Analysis
Important Note:
All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
