About this Research Topic
Given the evident importance of oral medicine within the veterinary community, as indicated by a recent survey, we aim to address the frustration expressed by 71% of respondents regarding the lack of
knowledge in this discipline. This special series strives to expose primary care practitioners and specialists to the evolving landscape of comparative oral and maxillofacial medicine. Through a focus on case-based clinical insights, review articles, and advanced clinical research, the series aims to illuminate the field's intricacies, emphasizing cutting-edge diagnostic techniques and targeted therapeutic approaches. By actively participating in this series, authors will not only contribute to closing the
knowledge void but also elevate the awareness of oral medicine as a distinctive subspecialty within Veterinary Dentistry. Leveraging the renowned reputation of Frontiers in Veterinary Science, especially
within the Veterinary Dentistry and Oromaxillofacial Surgery section, this series is poised to be a pioneering initiative, addressing a critical need in the field and establishing itself as the first of its kind.
This Research Topic aims to enhance the comprehension of oral medicine in veterinary practice, inviting diverse contributions such as original clinical research, case series, selected reviews, and individual case
reports. We emphasize distinct areas within oral medicine, including autoimmune diseases, osteomyelitis, medication-related osteonecrosis, granulomatous diseases, immune-mediated disorders, and pre-cancerous lesions affecting the oral cavity. The focus extends to sharing oral medicine cases, offering exposure and understanding of this crucial discipline. Clinical research manuscripts should broaden insights into non-surgical oral conditions, while welcome review articles summarizing current research in oral medicine. Our goal is to fill knowledge gaps, provide valuable insights, and advance the field of Veterinary Oral Medicine.
