About this Research Topic
The aim of the current Research Topic is to attract high-qualified translational and clinical specialists, material scientists and academicians to present in their original and review articles the last achievements in the field of tumor theranostics, especially with a use of high-potential bio-inspired and biomimetic nanocarriers allowing enhancing drug permeability and retention. The clinical position is to reduce systematic and acute toxicity, to gain higher drug targeting efficacy, and to increase BTB permeability on demand with less harm for patients and to reduce therapy costs. The R&D position is to construct novel specified theranostic agents for various cases, including biomimetic and bio-inspired nanocarriers, and novel organ, tissue and BTB in vitro models, basing on microfluidic chips. And, finally, the academicians’ position is to bring closer understanding of the mechanisms of enhanced nanocarriers permeability and retention, BTB normal and pathological states, so that the development of new drugs is more scientifically justified.
Researchers are encouraged to submit Clinical Trial, Mini Review, Original Research, Review and Systematic Review articles that are relevant to this Research Topic that will cover topics such as (but are not limited to):
• Technology of novel nanocarriers for tumor theranostics with enhanced permeability and retention.
• Biomimetic and bio-inspired nanocarriers in comparison with their fully-synthetic analogues.
• Drug targeting efficacy enhancement routes and non-invasive safe control techniques (magnetic resonance imaging, magnetic particle imaging, computed tomography and the others).
• Development of BTB-penetrating drugs, including theranostic agents based on nanoparticle formulations.
• Studies on BTB-permeability increase and decrease in the normal and the pathological states of BTB.
• Clinical trials and clinical efficacy of novel drugs based on nanocarriers.
• Studies on BTB-permeability modulation mechanisms, including ones based on the use of cell-penetrating peptides, ones based on the use of chemical agents and the physical mechanisms.
• Novel in vitro organ, tissue and BTB models, including microfluidic platforms (“organ-on-a-chip”, “tumor-on-a-chip”, “barrier-on-a-chip”).
• Fundamental studies on various BTBs structure, functions, and drug permeation.
