Background

This Research Topic is Volume II of a series. The previous volume, which has attracted over 30k views can be found here:Exploration of innovative strategies focusing on advanced nano-/biomaterials for optimizing oncological treatment and tissue restoration.

Undesirable oncological therapy and inadequate tissue restoration have been intractable challenges to human health worldwide. Despite many attempts, current treatment approaches always suffer from inevitable limitations that lead to unsatisfactory therapeutic outcomes. The rapid progress of nano-biotechnology has sparked a revolution in the fields of oncological therapy and tissue restoration.

Therefore, innovative strategies employing versatile nano-/biomaterials are of increasing interest since they allow for maximum positive treatment outcomes while minimizing side effects. Meanwhile, these advanced nano-/biomaterials present a variety of merits (e.g., targeting, microenvironment modulation, high efficacy, biosafety) and show great potential as therapeutic tools in precise nanomedicine and regenerative medicine. Therefore, in Volume II of this collection, the most striking findings or latest research advances on ingenious strategies employing versatile nano-/biomaterials for oncological therapy and tissue restoration will be considerably highlighted and discussed in this research topic.



This Research Topic aims to:

1) better understand the interactions between advanced nano-/bio-system and complex tissues/tumors, and provide a platform to elaborate possible cellular or molecular mechanisms involved in oncological treatment and defected tissue restoration.

2) share rationally designed strategies to surmount currently existing physiological challenges and possible clinical translation hurdles, which is expected to provide new research directions for the development of novel nano-/biomaterials in cancer interventions and tissue repair.

3) identify the pros and cons of this innovatively designed nano-/bio-system in the application for precise nanomedicine and regenerative medicine, and ultimately boost the translation of elaborate nano- /biomaterials from fundamental research to clinical medicine.

This Research Topic focuses on promising, innovative strategies using versatile nano-/bio-materials for optimizing oncological therapy or/and enhancing defected tissue restoration. Both original research papers and review articles with significant findings or viewpoints are welcome. Preferred themes include but are not limited to:

- Innovative strategies by designing versatile nano-/biomaterials for oncological therapies

- Nanomedicine with various treatment modalities and imaging in cancer theranostics

- Nanosystem-based drug delivery, nucleic acid delivery and biomimetic nanosystems

- Diagnostics and therapeutics in nanomedicine

- Tumor microenvironment-, stimuli- responsive nanomaterials or catalytic nanozymes

- “Smart” biomaterials or hydrogels for bone or skin tissue regeneration

- 3D-printed or hybrid scaffolds, bioprinted tissue constructs in hard/soft tissue restoration

- The mechanisms on interactions between cells (e.g., immune or stem cells) and biomaterials, intercellular communication and cell signaling in tissue engineering

- Novel “cell-free” therapy strategies, including extracellular vesicles, liposomes as new generation tools for regenerative medicine

- Gene therapy or nucleic acid drug delivery in regenerative medicine
