About this Research Topic
During the last decade research on vestibular migraine has been fostered by widely accepted diagnostic criteria put forth by the International Headache Society and the Bárány Society. Nonetheless, vestibular migraine is still far from being as clearly delineated as most other vestibular disorders. The reasons for this are manyfold: (1) the clinical presentation of vestibular migraine is heterogeneous in terms of symptoms and duration, (2) there is no diagnostic marker and the diagnosis is based mainly on the history, (3) several other well established vestibular disorders are associated with migraine, (4) there is an overlap between vestibular migraine and Menière’s disease and the differential diagnosis between both disorders is often challenging, (5) the pathophysiology of vestibular migraine is unknown, (6) treatment of vestibular migraine is not evidence-based.
On the research front, vestibular migraine continues to be an intriguing field inviting scientists to unearth more about the interplay between migraine and the vestibular system, hence improving prospects for individuals suffering from this condition. We encourage researchers from all related disciplines to submit any types of manuscripts supported by Frontiers in Neurology, pertaining but not limited to the following topics:
• Phenotypes and clinical subgroups in vestibular migraine
• Clinical findings in the acute episode and in the interval
• Reviewing / revising diagnostic criteria for vestibular migraine.
• Evolving vestibular migraine – characterizing patients that do not (yet) meet diagnostic criteria
• Borderland between vestibular migraine and other vestibular disorders such as Menière’s disease, recurrent vestibulopathy of unknown cause, persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD)
• Laboratory testing
• Functional imaging
• Pharmacological treatment and non-pharmacological intervention
• Psychological aspects, burden and prognosis of vestibular migraine
• Chronic symptoms in vestibular migraine
• Association between migraine and other vestibular disorders
