About this Research Topic
This convening brought together oncology experts from North-Eastern Nigerian universities and the University of Miami Health System to explore and advance collaborative efforts in cancer research, in particular, focusing on cancer epidemiology, etiology, care, and outcomes in the region. It also enabled interactions with policy makers to ensure the recommendations and reviewed implementation strategies.
The main objective of the convening is to promote multi-institutional and interdisciplinary knowledge sharing and research collaboration among the academia, healthcare industry, and other stakeholders, ultimately to improve cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and patient outcomes in the region. Specifically, the convening aimed to tackle cancer etiology and risk factors specific to the North-Eastern Nigerian population; innovations in cancer care, diagnosis, and treatment strategies tailored for regional needs; psychosocial and supportive care in cancer management; addressing healthcare disparities and promoting access to quality cancer care in the region; cancer prevention, screening, and early detection programs; novel therapeutic interventions and clinical trials, amongst others.
This can be achieved by strengthening the existing Transatlantic Gynecological Cancer Research Consortium (TAGCReC) and expanding its membership. This consortium can be strengthened by establishing clear communication channels, fostering regular interaction among members, defining common goals and research priorities to allow for focused collaboration and utilization of collective resources. Leveraging existing expertise within the consortium and seeking external partnerships can also broaden the impact of research efforts. Stakeholder and community engagements are also paramount. Finally, securing adequate funding and resources, as well as streamlining ethical and regulatory processes, are essential for the success of consortium-based cancer research. With these, it would be easier to conduct epidemiological research to create a database on common malignancies and document a database of clinicians and researchers in the field of oncology for easy networking, and further collaborative research across the Atlantic.
This call for manuscripts is for original data, case studies with literature review in the Nigeria and transnationally. The research topics should cover fields such as cervical cancer, ovarian, endometrial and other gynecologic cancers, breast cancer, pediatric cancers, psychology research related to cancers, women's health, cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, and prostate cancer. Review articles are only accepted if they are solicited from experts in their field.
Please note: Manuscripts consisting solely of bioinformatics, computational analysis, or predictions of public databases which are not accompanied by validation (independent clinical or patient cohort, or biological validation in vitro or in vivo, which are not based on public databases) are not suitable for publication in this journal.
Keywords: cervical cancer, breast cancer, pediatric cancers, psychology, women's health, prostate cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, ovarian cancer, North-Eastern Nigeria, Miami University, Health Systems
Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
