This collection of journal articles reflects the diverse and comprehensive landscape of contemporary climate science and looks into the future of the subject. Ranging from the historical foundations to future projections, the articles explore critical themes such as the global stocktake of heat, water, and carbon, the status and limits of climate predictability, and the dynamics of rapid and irreversible changes in the climate system, often referred to as tipping points, the future of climate modelling, insights from paleoclimate, and the role of polar regions. The collection also delves into the impacts of climate change on water availability, regional climate change drivers, and the specific needs and challenges faced by different parts of the world, including Africa, South America, Asia, and Pacific Island States. Furthermore, the integration of human behaviour and climate change, considerations of climate justice, and the attribution of anthropogenic climate change highlight the interdisciplinary nature of climate research. The articles also emphasise the importance of climate information for building resilient societies, addressing health implications, and exploring the ways and consequences of climate intervention. Overall, this compilation showcases the multidimensional facets of climate science, spanning observations, modelling, regional analyses, societal implications, and ethical considerations.
