Since the advent of Geriatric Medicine as a specific area of interest in the mid-twentieth century by Marjory Warren in England, this important field has grown and developed. Many countries have developed well-structured Geriatric care, with specialization in Geriatric Medicine, healthcare professionals trained in the care of the older patient, a structure of community services, nursing care homes, rehabilitation, palliative care, and more. However, many countries are still struggling with developing adequate services for the growing aging population. Clearly, the strength and experience of countries with well-structured care of older people, can serve as a catalyst for helping countries with less-developed Geriatric care to promote and develop professional training, organization of services, and standardization of care.
This Research Topic challenges all countries to describe the structure and development of Geriatric Care in their country, the aging structure of their population, the availability of specialist Geriatricians and other age-orientated healthcare professionals, existing health care services for the older population, academic activities in Geriatrics and Gerontology, challenges, and future developments. This sharing of knowledge will provide an important contribution to providing strong and stable care for the older population worldwide.
In this Research Topic, we welcome the submission of original research, reviews, mini-reviews, case reports, clinical trials, and opinion articles, that explore innovative applications and strategies within the field. Specific themes we are interested in addressing include (but are not limited to):
• The country-specific aging structure of the population
• An overview of professional and academic health care providers
• Structure of health care services for the older patient
• Country-specific challenges and future planning and developments
By sharing your research and insights, we believe we can build a body of work that significantly forwards progress in this vital area of geriatric care.
