About this Research Topic
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is among the most malignant tumors worldwide and the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality. The survival rate ranges from several years to a few months, in accordance mainly with the disease stage, and often remains unpredictable in the current clinical settings. Epidemiologically, the spread of the metabolic associated conditions supporting non-alcoholic fatty liver disease onset worldwide, together with alcohol abuse and the viral chronic damage, represent the main reasons concerting its onset and evolution.
HCC treatment is directly linked to the stage at the diagnosis and engages a series of loco-regional interventions and combined strategies involving systemic treatments and liver transplant. Regarding chemotherapy, recent discoveries shed light on new potentially useful strategies even if, globally, the response rate target seems to need some major improvements to support the burden of the disease.
For these reasons, it is important to identify novel biomarkers in HCC to provide the best clinical treatment and to better predict the prognosis. With this Research Topic, we aim to collect the recent advances in the discovery of new prognostic factors for hepatocellular carcinoma and the novel therapeutic strategies available, from surgery to systemic intervention. Attention will be devoted to novel biomarkers, innovative surgical techniques, the potential of targeted and immune-based systemic therapies, along with the combined strategies involving liver transplant.
Researchers, clinicians, and experts in the fields of hepatology, oncology, and related disciplines are encouraged to submit original research articles, reviews, mini-reviews, systematic reviews, exceptional case reports, perspectives, short communications as well as theoretical papers, opinions, and methods that will seek to curate recent advancements in the discovery of these new prognostic factors as well as enlighten us on the ongoing improvements in the surgical and systemic therapeutic approaches against HCC.
