About this Research Topic
Our aim is to better understand oroimmunological processes in interaction with oral microenvironmental factors at the molecular, cellular and tissue levels. This interdisciplinary issue will address different oral domains that differ by a variety of features to broaden the understanding of oral immunity in health and disease: periodontal disease, dental disease and maxillofacial diseases. This will provide a comprehensive perspective on immune cells and environmental factors (such as the oral microbiota) in oral health and disease. Possible underlying mechanisms of oroimmunological processes and future research areas may be identified. Ultimately, this collection also aims to overcome barriers between dentistry and immunology. Dentists from different specialties together with physicians and basic scientists of the field of immunology and related scientific disciplines will share their findings, opinions and hypotheses with the scientific and clinical community. Overall, this interdisciplinary Research Topic aims to decipher the interplay between oral microenvironmental factors and oral immune responses in the context of periodontal, dental and orthodontic diseases should lead to synergies that ultimately lead to new insights into oral immunity and to much better prevention, diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases in general.
This new topic highlights the interplay between oral microenvironmental factors and immuno-inflammatory processes to provide a comprehensive perspective on immune cells and environmental factors in oral health and disease.
Original research articles on immunologic processes from the fields of periodontology, endodontics, orthodontics, implantology and oral and maxillofacial surgery are invited for submission. Reviews in the field of oral immunology can also be submitted if they help to better understand the oroimmunological processes in the oral cavity. The type of article can be basic science, translational or clinical. Investigated oroimmunological processes for the prevention, diagnosis and therapy of oral diseases are very welcome. Microbiological research related to oral immunology should also be included in this interdisciplinary issue on oral immunology. Other areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Cellular and molecular mechanisms of oral immunity and oral immune regulation
- Oral microenvironment in cellular immune cell communication and cell-cell signalling
- Mechanotransduction in the regulation of oral innate and adaptive immune responses
- Interplay between oral immune response and oral microbiota
