Phenotype based drug discovery (PDD) approach is reemerging as an alternative platform for drug discovery. This Research Topic will provide research article and reviews covering various model systems, technical advances in imaging and image analyses that are used in various PDD based research. In PDD screens, compounds of therapeutic value are identified based on the phenotypic perturbations produced irrespective of target(s) or mechanism of action. Here articles showcasing cell-based setup, higher order of PDD screening setup using small animal models will be collected. Since PDD screens integrate physiology, multiple signaling mechanisms during the screening process, we will also invite articles that showcase integrated approach towards drug discovery, mechanism studies and target id, highlighting their biomedical applicability. Taken together this Research Topic will highlight the advantages gained by adopting a PDD approach in drug discovery. Such PDD platform can complement target-based systems that are currently in practice to accelerate drug discovery.
