About this Research Topic
The impact of respiratory viruses on human health can be significant. Respiratory viral infections can be associated with various clinical manifestations, ranging from self-limiting upper respiratory infections to more devastating diseases such as pneumonia. However, in contrast to many other infectious diseases, effective vaccines or antiviral treatments for viral respiratory infections are either still not available or offer only limited protection. The difficult situation of the widespread prevalence of diseases caused by influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, coronavirus and rhinovirus, the general lack of immunity to natural sterilization and the high morbidity and mortality rate pose a significant social challenge. Furthermore, an increasing number of children and the elderly are more vulnerable to respiratory viral infections. We need improved treatment and prevention strategies.
This Research Topic aims to collect studies on viral pathogenesis, prevention, clinical presentation, and diagnostic evaluation, particularly in light of the human influenza viruses, respiratory syncytial virus, and human coronaviruses, to identify safer and more effective approaches to address these health challenges.
We welcome submissions focusing on, but not limited to, the following subtopics:
● Viral pathogenesis of different respiratory viruses, including the human influenza viruses, respiratory syncytial virus, and human coronaviruses
● Molecular diagnosis of respiratory virus infections
● Risk and protective factors for the morbidity, severity, and mortality of respiratory viruses
● Possible complications and the risk of developing other diseases following recovery from respiratory viral infection
● Innate immune responses to respiratory viral infections in the upper respiratory tract
