Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent disorder characterized by ovarian dysfunction, manifesting through irregular menstrual cycles, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovarian morphology. Affecting up to 10% of the adult female population, PCOS is associated with numerous long-term complications, including infertility, metabolic diseases, and psychological issues. The disorder is increasingly recognized as a significant public health concern due to its association with obesity, modern lifestyle changes, and stress, which contribute to rising healthcare costs. The etio-pathogenesis of PCOS is complex, closely linked to insulin resistance, and influenced by genetic, environmental, dietary, and lifestyle factors. Despite extensive research, the exact pathogenetic mechanisms remain elusive. In adolescents, the onset of PCOS is often linked to early developmental factors such as intrauterine growth retardation and early adrenarche. The diagnostic criteria for adolescent PCOS are stringent to prevent misdiagnosis, focusing on hyperandrogenism and oligomenorrhoea. With the increasing prevalence of obesity and lifestyle changes, there is a notable rise in adolescent PCOS cases, highlighting the need for further research into identification, risk factors, and effective treatment and prevention strategies.
This research topic aims to explore the multifaceted aspects of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome in adolescence, with a focus on understanding its pathogenesis, identifying predisposing risk factors, and developing effective treatment and preventive strategies. The objective is to address critical questions regarding the diagnostic criteria, treatment outcomes, and developmental origins of adolescent PCOS, while also considering its public health implications. By examining these areas, the research seeks to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of adolescent PCOS and inform future clinical practices and public health policies.
