Advances in Surgical Treatment of Primary Spinal Tumors

Primary spinal tumors, including tumors that invade the spinal cord and nerve roots, as well as that invade the vertebral body, can have serious consequences for patients and their families. Spinal tumors are usually located in vital and sensitive areas of the body, adding to the complexity and difficulty of surgical resection. The developments of surgical technology related to primary spinal tumors mainly focuses on these two aspects: the reduction of complications, and the total en-bloc resection of tumors. The advancement of internal fixation technology, such as absorbable materials and 3D-printed implants, also provides novel support for spinal reconstruction after tumor resection. Meanwhile, the progresses of comprehensive treatment, including stereotactic radiotherapy, neoadjuvant chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy, have partly changed the choice of surgical timing and surgical approach for patients with spinal tumors. However, the prognosis of many patients with malignant primary spinal tumors still remains poor, and patients may have neurological or spinal activity disorders after surgery, affecting the quality of life.
Our research topic will focus on the surgical techniques and adjuvant treatments of primary spinal tumors, and the effects of these treatments on patient prognosis and quality of life. Due to the low incidence of many types of primary spinal tumors, there is a lacking of systematic summary and promotion for some new surgical approaches and comprehensive treatments. Thus, we hope to explore the approaches, techniques and fixations of spinal tumor surgery, the effect of comprehensive treatments, the combination of comprehensive treatments and surgery on primary spinal tumors, and whether these treatments improve patient prognosis and quality of life.
We will welcome the Original Research, Review, Clinical Trial, Case Report, and other article types related to the aspects below (but not limited):
● The application of novel surgical approaches and techniques in spinal tumors;
● The application of novel spinal internal fixations in spinal tumor surgery, such as 3D printing implants;
● The prognosis and quality of life of patients with primary spinal tumors after surgery or combined with adjuvant therapy;
● The impact of different surgical approaches on the prognosis and quality of life of patients with primary spinal tumors;
● The effect of comprehensive treatments, such as stereotactic radiotherapy, neoadjuvant chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy, on the prognosis of patients with primary spinal tumors, and the possible impact of these comprehensive treatments on the choice of surgical timing and surgical approach.
