About this Research Topic
HTS is a good alternative to other diagnostic tests, especially in the context of unexpected or unknown viruses that might be potential threats to plant health. Knowledge of the occurrence and degree of infestation of crops, weeds, trees, and ornamental plants allows the introduction of appropriate regulations and thus prevents the occurrence of an epidemic, as well as allowing for the development of new strategies for plant protection.
In this Research Topic, we aim to collect scientific works that serve as a reference for scientists regarding the latest applications of techniques allowing the analysis of plant viromes in phytovirology. Particularly, this method is used to identify emerging or re-emerging viruses that often fail to be recognized by classical diagnostic methods.
Through the use of HTS techniques, this article collection will compile results regarding the discovery of new viruses or different variants of known viruses, with specific attention to the most recent implementations of the major technologies currently being used. In particular, NGS will be emphasized as a tool for resolving phylogenetic relationships in phytovirology and improving the specificity of molecular diagnostics, providing the necessary information for the development of new advanced methods or improving existing ones.
