Diabetes care should be person centered and take into consideration the persons values, needs, preferences and social situation. However, there is a limitation of studies describing older people’s experiences, wishes and needs with regards to living with any form of diabetes. Older people have typically lived for many years with the disease and presence of diabetes related complications is therefore common. Many have profound knowledge of diabetes self-care and vast experience of dealing with different situations, but with age comes other health conditions not related to diabetes and frailty to a various degree.
The research topic will focus on a holistic view of older peoples experience of diabetes, and will help to inform healthcare professionals on how to plan and provide the best quality of care.
Specific themes of interest include but are not limited to:
1. Case reports of older people with diabetes and relevant complications
2. Diabetes, frailty and geriatric syndromes
3. Inpatient challenges for geriatric diabetes patients, e.g. lack of nutrition
4. The hospital discharge process after inpatient care for a diabetes related conditions in older people
5. Follow up in primary care of older people with diabetes e.g., general practitioners and diabetes nurses
6. Diabetes in home care organizations
7. Diabetes in assisted living facilities
8. End of life with diabetes
