About this Research Topic
Orthodontic treatment requires physiological translocation and remodeling of craniofacial bone and soft tissues. These are more extensive during growth and continued tooth eruption after first occlusal contact, and with aging the limits narrow and bone remodeling slows. Different clinical strategies such as growth modification by orthopedic effects, dentoalveolar remodeling processes by tooth displacement, maxillofacial surgical repositioning and pharmacological interventions are therapeutically applied and combined to get predictable treatment effects with least bone dehiscence. Periosteal and alveolar bone biology is controlled by the bone remodeling regulatory system, whose adequate function is a prerequisite for the effects of orthodontic treatment. Disorders of the bone regulatory remodeling system cause diseases such as primary failure of eruption or juvenile idiopathic arthritis.
The scope of this research topic includes:
- Craniofacial growth and orthodontic treatment evaluation (extraction treatment, archform, anchorage, skelettal dislocation including orthopedic treatmens and dental remodelling effects).
- Risk assessment for adverse effects during orthodontic treatment (bone dehiscence and gingival recessions).
- Periosteal and dentoalveolar bone biology.
- Pharmacological interventions in the bone remodelling regulatory system.
- The role of inflammation in tooth movement and arthritis of the temporomandibular joint.
We would like to clarify the craniofacial and biological effects of orthodontic treatments, measure advantages and disadvantages of different strategies to make optimal therapeutical use of the bone regulatory remodeling system and to identify limits to reduce undesirable side effects.
