About this Research Topic
The wild environments inhabited by reptiles and wild bird species serve as reservoirs for various pathogens. Recent research has identified the presence of Adenoviridae, Circoviridae, Retroviridae, and Parvoviridae in reptiles, hinting at their potential as pathogen reservoirs. This proposal aims to investigate the ecological and behavioral aspects of reptiles and explore their possible role as a reservoir for pathogens. Additionally, our research focuses on the intriguing relationship between reptiles and wildfowl, specifically studying the transmission routes of pathogens, such as adenovirus, between snakes and avian species. Furthermore, as wildfowl can be infected with a range of pathogens, including Avian Influenza Virus (AIV), Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV), and insect-borne diseases, we aim to uncover the novel transmission routes from wildfowl to reptiles. This holds tremendous potential to advance the field of microbial symbioses and enhance our understanding of emerging infectious diseases.

- Identify Transmission Routes: Investigate the mechanisms by which pathogens are transmitted between reptiles and avian, exploring potential transmission routes and risk factors.
- Pathogen Diversity and Dynamics: Determine the range and prevalence of pathogens in both reptiles and avian populations, studying their circulation dynamics.
- Pathogen Impact on Reptile Health: Assess the health impacts of such pathogens in reptiles, examining the consequences of these infections on reptile populations.
- Pathogen Impact on Avian Health: how avian populations are effected.
- Conservation Implications: Evaluate the conservation implications on avian and reptile populations, drawing attention to the potential threats posed by emerging infectious diseases and developing strategies for effective management.
By delving into the dynamics of microbial symbioses between reptiles and wildfowl, our research aims to expand our knowledge on reptile and avian populations alone as well as explore the intricate relationship between these two groups of animals.
