About this Research Topic
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), infectious diseases are the second global cause of death after cardiovascular diseases. Most are lower respiratory tract infections, and most pathogens are microorganisms, including viruses, bacteria, protists, and fungi. Profilaxis and treatment are essential for epidemiological control and mortality and morbidity decrease. In many cases, safer and more effective vaccines and drugs are urgent. A special issue of concern is antibiotic resistance. The WHO predicted that the number of deaths related to antimicrobial resistance will rise from 0.7 to 10 million by 2050.
The main objective of this Research Topic is to report of new confirmed drug targets, drugs, and protective antigens of microbial pathogens, as well as their implementation in new treatments and vaccines undergoing preclinical or clinical studies or in significant improvements to the existing ones. The second objective is the description of new strategies for antigen, vaccine, drug target, or drug discovery.
The term microbial pathogens include any zoonotic or anthroponotic infectious microorganism capable of causing human diseases. In this Research Topic, original articles and reviews are welcome, especially those focused on intracellular pathogens. The subtopics are:
1. Strategies for antigen and drug target discovery
2. Discovery and validation of vaccine-candidate antigens
3. New drug targets
4. Discovery of new antibiotics
5. Design of new drugs
6. Drug repurposing
7. Preclinical testing of new vaccine and drug formulations in animal
