About this Research Topic
We are still learning so much about the magnetism of our Star, the Sun. However, there remains so much more out there to investigate and understand about the Sun and its impact on the solar system. This Editor’s Challenge can explore the multi-scale coupling processes of magnetism, convection, and circulation on the Sun as they link to create the atmosphere we observe and the events that they drive to impact the solar system and our lives. While progress on understanding the origins and evolution of solar magnetism and its influence on the Earth is rapid and long-established, the stellar equivalent is lagging. Observations, models, and theories are welcomed exploring the magnetic lives of stars and how we might best use advances in one area to accelerate understanding in others.
The Specialty Chief Editor would like to invite critical, ambitious, and courageous contributions, theoretical, conceptual, empirical, or computational, that can provide new insights and stimulate a constructive debate around the following open questions:
- What processes contribute to the origins of magnetism in stars, and how?
- What is the evolution of stellar magnetism across temporal and spatial scales?
- What are the impacts of stellar magnetism on the planetary systems orbiting them?
- What is the state-of-the-art in characterizing stellar magnetism observationally and what are we learning?
- What is the state-of-the-art in modeling stellar magnetism and what are we learning?
The Research Topic solicits contributions from the Editorial Board members of the Stellar and Solar Physics section, as well as contributions from the Exoplanets editorial board.
The authors should address these challenges in Reviews, Mini Reviews, Original Research and Brief Research Reports. Perspective and Opinion articles are also welcome, contributing viewpoints and interpretations about a specific area of investigation in Stellar and Solar Physics and Exoplanets research.
The Specialty Chief Editors of Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences launch a new series of Research Topics to highlight current challenges across the field. Other titles in the series are:
Editor's Challenge in Astronomical Instrumentation: Machine Learning Advances
Editor's Challenge in Exoplanets: Next Generation of Exoplanet Research
Editor's Challenge in Astrostatistics: Deep Learning in Astrophysics - What are the Lessons?
Keywords: Editor's challenge, stellar magnetic field, stellar life, exoplanets magnetic field, star-planet system
Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
