Background

The international body on climate science, the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) has not only been a driving force for action but also influential in international agreements. For some time now, their reports clearly state the urgent need for action for sustainable climate change, since we can no longer take a business-as-usual approach. If trends remain as they are, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will not be reached by 2030. Therefore, this call for papers is aligned with SDG 13 which calls for ‘urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts’. The climate change goal is intrinsically linked to all other 16 SDGs from ending poverty/zero hunger to good health and well-being to sustainable cities and communities to life below water and on land. In order to promote economic growth, an inclusive and sustainable future, and well-being for all our people, places and the planet, it is important to implement local, national, and international strategies and policies.

This research topic focuses on key economic sectors given that the OECD states that the five economic sectors of industry, electricity, agriculture, transport, and buildings are the main sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, causing nearly 90% of emissions.

The call for papers that highlight policy solutions in one of these key economic sectors at region/country level that the government, industry and/or business can implement. With population growth towards 10 billion expected by 2050, and with the Artificial Intelligence revolution underway, we may need to look at AI to help reverse the damage to health and well-being for all our people, plants, and the planet.

This special issue's call for papers serves as a platform for researchers and experts to contribute their insights, research findings, and innovative ideas to the monumental task of reversing climate change. By addressing the economic dimensions of this crisis, we aspire to not only advance our understanding but also to drive actionable solutions that guide us toward a more sustainable and prosperous future for all. We invite researchers to join us in this important endeavor as we collectively pave the way for a world that thrives, sustains, and preserves the beauty and vitality of our planet for generations to come.

• Who leads a Research Topic? 

  A team of guest editors (called topic editors) lead their Research Topic. This editorial team oversees the entire process, from the initial topic proposal to calls for participation, the peer review, and final publications.

  The team may also include topic coordinators, who help the topic editors send calls for participation, liaise with topic editors on abstracts, and support contributing authors. In some cases, they can also be assigned as reviewers.

• What is the role of a topic editor?

  As a topic editor (TE), you will take the lead on all editorial decisions for the Research Topic, starting with defining its scope.
