About this Research Topic
Through this special issue, we aim to critically investigate the existing knowledge gaps and challenges surrounding inequalities in physical activity and sport participation while highlighting the successes and shortcomings of current efforts to achieve equitable access. We aim to comprehensively understand the complex factors contributing to unequal opportunities by publishing innovative research, theoretical frameworks, and evidence-based practices. By exploring diverse perspectives and interdisciplinary approaches, we strive to identify effective strategies, policies, and interventions to facilitate meaningful and sustainable change. This special issue intends to inspire transformative actions that promote inclusive and accessible physical activity and sports opportunities for all.
This special issue aims to explore the scope of inequalities in physical activity and comprehensive sport participation, focusing on fostering equality, non-discrimination, and inclusivity. Authors are encouraged to delve into various dimensions of inequality, including but not limited to socioeconomic status, gender and gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, age, and disability, and welcomes to focus on the following topic areas:
- navigating inequalities and discrimination faced by women and girls, persons with disabilities, older persons, sexual and gender minorities, ethnic minorities, religious minorities and other marginalized groups
- intersectionality in lifelong physical activity and sport participation
- beyond barriers: The dynamics of inclusive sport participation
- sport participation: Infrastructure, socioeconomics, and the environment
- elevate and thrive: Sports' Lifelong Impact in Underserved Communities
Specific themes that contributors should address include identifying the factors contributing to inequalities, analyzing the consequences of such disparities, proposing interventions and strategies to address these inequalities, and evaluating the effectiveness of policies and programs that promote equality and inclusivity. Manuscripts of interest include original research articles, practical interventions, reviews, and systematic reviews.
