Background

Oral microbial diseases, such as dental caries, periodontal diseases, oral candidiasis, and mucositis, pose significant challenges to oral health due to their polymicrobial nature and biofilm formation. Current antimicrobial treatments are often broad-spectrum, leading to issues such as antimicrobial resistance, damage to healthy oral flora, patient non-compliance, and high treatment costs. Recent studies have highlighted the limitations of these traditional approaches and underscored the need for more targeted and effective treatments. Despite advancements in understanding the microbial etiology of these diseases, there remains a gap in translating this knowledge into practical, clinical solutions. This research topic aims to bridge this gap by fostering discussions on innovative strategies for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of oral microbial diseases.

This research topic aims to explore and develop novel interventional strategies for managing oral microbial diseases. The primary objectives include identifying new antimicrobial agents, understanding their mechanisms of action, and developing precision approaches for biofilm control. Additionally, the research will focus on leveraging molecular modeling and artificial intelligence to discover new microbial targets and enhance drug development. By addressing these questions, the research seeks to overcome the current limitations of broad-spectrum antimicrobials and pave the way for more effective and selective treatments.

• Who leads a Research Topic? 

  A team of guest editors (called topic editors) lead their Research Topic. This editorial team oversees the entire process, from the initial topic proposal to calls for participation, the peer review, and final publications.
