With the continuous increase in fossil fuel consumption by industrial sectors, the world is confronted with climate change issues such as environmental pollution and ecological imbalance. Consequently, global environmental governance has become a crucial challenge that relevant stakeholders must address. From the perspective of global governance, it is essential to adhere to the commitments made in the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and implement the global greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets. This necessitates the collective responsibility of all regions to reduce their GHG emissions, prompting the need to accelerate the adjustment of the economic structure. However, it is important to acknowledge that participating in GHG reduction efforts can lead to economic emission reduction costs and increased uncertainties for the economic development of various countries. These factors might hinder the sustainable growth of regional economies and potentially diminish the enthusiasm of each region to engage in GHG reduction initiatives. Therefore, alongside actively responding to climate change, promoting the optimization and adjustment of regional economies has become a consensus among all countries.
This Research Topic aims to deepen the discussions on issues related to GHG reduction and regional economic structural transformation. The focus will be on providing an important theoretical basis for formulating efficient and feasible regional environmental governance policies.
Subtopics of interest include, but are not limited to the following:
(1) Assessment of the current situation and future trend of fossil energy consumption and the resulting GHG during the process of regional economic restructuring;
(2) Evaluation of regional economic restructuring, environmental regulation policies, and GHG reduction;
(3) The impact of GHG abatement on the social-economy-environmental system.
