About this Research Topic
The goal of this research topic is to provide a deeper understanding about the relationship between new media, the field of psychiatry and mental health issues in general. A lot has been documented about the
role of “old media” such as TV shows and films and their representation of mental health, however, only a handful of scientific articles covered these topics in videogames, which have a rapidly growing worldwide audience, especially among younger generations. Other new media, such as mobile applications, virtual reality or interactive AI language programs are also going to be very important in the evolution of mental health care in the 21st century. Our goal is to gather new knowledge about this important topic, so that
professional mental health workers are aware about the potential risks but also benefits of new media in relation with mental health.
This Research Topic welcomes manuscripts that cover the following topics:
- psychiatry and video games
- the impact of video games on mental health, positive or negative
- mental health applications and their role in psychiatry
- the use of AI in psychiatric research
- future technology in psychiatry
- the use of virtual reality in psychiatry
- ethical, legal, and social implications and consequences of digital developments in psychiatry
