About this Research Topic
Non-clinical and translational research encompass a wide variety of in vitro, in vivo and ex vivo studies to assess the efficacy and safety of pioneer pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and medical devices. The drastic evolution of human and animal treatments and therapies in the last decades has been associated with an increased complexity of the study designs. Moreover, the high standards of animal welfare and the progressive replacement and reduction of laboratory animal triggers the refinement in the methodologies employed and urge a continuous improvement in the analysis and interpretation of data.
The complexity of non-clinical and translational studies and the inter-study and intra-study variability can lead to different pitfalls that hinder the optimal analyses and interpretation of the results. Indeed, a wide variety of issues can cause detrimental effects on the outcome of these studies including: enzootic or re-emerging infections; diet-related problems; deficiencies in administration routes, volumes and timepoints; suboptimal collection, storage and processing of biological samples; misnomer of histopathological findings; lack of control data. The aim of this Research Topic is to promote and share investigations that optimize data interpretation in non-clinical studies and animal-to-human translation of the results.
This Research Topic seeks manuscript submissions on routine pitfalls, cutting-edge study designs and methodologies, applications of special technologies, background information and control data benefiting the analysis and interpretation of non-clinical and translational studies. All submission types are appreciated, including original research, review, methods, data report, perspective, and clinical trial. The publications shall focus on, but by no means limited to:
- Control data (hematology, biochemical, histopathological findings, etc.) of strains and substrains of laboratory animals.
- Phenotyping and background data of cutting-edge animal models of human diseases.
- Enzootic and reemerging diseases in laboratory animals.
- Routine pitfalls on sample collection, storage and processing and/or solutions to overcome them.
- Safety and animal welfare of complex study designs and in vivo methodologies.
- Interpretation of the Adversity of hematological, biochemical, and histopathological findings.
- Diet-associated problems in laboratory animals.
- Misnomers and misinterpretations of histopathological findings.
- Image analysis and machine learning in the development of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and medical devices.
