About this Research Topic
The development of oral diseases is linked with complex and multi-factorial causes. It is often believed that the causes involve microorganism pathogens, lifestyle factors, as well as environmental factors. In the past few years, it has been made aware that genetic factors also play a role in the development of oral diseases, such as periodontitis. Unlike the extensive studies on microorganism pathogens, environmental factors, and lifestyle behaviors; the genetic influences underlying many oral diseases are still inadequately understood and require further investigation. To date, only a small number of studies have investigated genetic variants associated with oral diseases, and more evidence is needed to fully understand specific roles of genes in the development of oral diseases.
The goal of this Research Topic is to encourage studies investigating the genetic influence in the oral diseases development including identifying the genetic markers and understanding the causal pathway from genetics, pathogens, to oral diseases. Biological studies, secondary data analyses, systematic reviews, reviews, and any relevant studies are welcome.
Themes of interest for this Research Topic include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Genome-wide association study investigating the risk loci for periodontitis, dental caries, tooth loss, oral cancer, etc.
2. Systematic review or meta-analysis on studies that are exploring the effects of genetics in oral diseases
3. Studies that explore the interaction between genetic factors and all other possible causes, including oral pathogens, in the development of oral diseases
4. Candidate gene study from biological experiments or clinical trials
5. Mendelian randomization study that explore the causal link between oral diseases and systematic diseases.
The following article types are welcome: Original research, systematic review, review, methods, protocols, technology report, hypothesis and theory, and clinical trial.
