About this Research Topic
Energy end users could play a key role in decarbonization by actively engaging in the clean energy transition as energy citizens. Energy citizens could be prosumers by producing, storing, and selling energy. They could be a part of a renewable energy community, sharing renewable energy assets and self-consuming the energy produced to minimize energy waste. Energy citizens could adopt energy-efficient technologies and distributed energy resources. Citizens with large energy needs can produce large-scale renewables and find innovative ways to reduce their carbon footprints. Moreover, they can participate in behavioural and lifestyle changes. By some estimates, energy citizens could reduce their carbon footprints by around 90% and in doing so contribute to around 20% of the decarbonization required to achieve global climate change objectives. This Research Topic will explore energy citizens' historic role and potential future role in driving decarbonization and the clean energy transition.

This Research Topic focuses on the instruments and best practices to enhance the effective involvement of energy citizens in the climate agenda. This collection will explore potential solutions to engage end-users as energy citizens, such as innovative financing, business models, digitalization, and new regulatory frameworks to empower prosumers, behavioural interventions, energy living labs, and tailored information campaigns. It is also essential to ensure the inclusive engagement of energy citizens, identifying solutions that can help people experiencing fuel poverty and vulnerable categories of end users.
