About this Research Topic
Asphalt pavement is essential infrastructure for roads, bridges, and airports. However, asphalt often experiences weakened mechanical properties and poor interfacial adhesion when subjected to complex service conditions, leading to frequent damage. Furthermore, secondary damage frequently occurs after maintenance, leading to costly repairs and negative impacts on operational efficiency and safety. Thus, it is essential to develop effective prevention and control measures through an improved understanding of the failure mechanism of asphalt pavement under complex service conditions and extend its service life.
As technological advancements continue to improve pavement performance and extend the lifetime of pavement materials, researchers and technologists must address the combined effects of various stress factors, including water and load, temperature and load, and other comprehensive water-temperature-load effects. This challenge presents an exciting opportunity to improve pavement field practices and better understand the performance of asphalt pavement under more demanding service conditions.
Therefore, this Research Topic aims to investigate the performance of asphalt pavement under complex service conditions. We welcome submissions that explore the following topics of interest (but are not limited to):

• Numerical modeling of complex service conditions
• Multiscale investigation of asphalt materials
• Development of high-performance asphalt pavement materials
